Explore Dayra Kuwait

Explore Dayra Logo
Explore Dayra is probably one of my favourite sites out there because it deviates from the mainstream format of blogs.

Explore Dayra is an events blog focused on what’s happening in Kuwait’s culture scene. Their listings are diverse spanning art exhibitions, design conferences, music performances, and any other cultural event out there.

Concept

What I really like is how well thought out and detailed the elements of the website are. Take the logo for example the logo. Dayra “is an indigenous Kuwaiti term for a compass used in the pre-oil era by the marine captains using the stars to help navigate their wooden ships to their destination. This is clearly reflected in their logo:

Landing Page

I also like the landing page a funky cross between the modern, old, and the imaginary. Look at the details: the camels crossing the background, the cityscape, the old boats (boom) and the oil tankers – it’s all well thought out.

The Dayra Blog

The layout is simple and to the point. You get a brief of each event, and you can share directly from the blog’s landing page. What’s even more brilliant is the contact information is directly in your face. Subscriptions are also there so if you want to be notified of new events, you get it in your inbox!

The inside pages are also feature packed in a concise way. You can even find the location of events on Google maps. Pretty cool!

Follow them on Twitter or get updates on their Facebook page.

I wish there were more specialised blogs for the people by the people! ~

Atlas Obscura

Atlast Obscura is a pretty cool website that invites people to share the most obscure and wondrous places around the world.

Atlas Obscura

In an age where everything seems to have been explored and there is nothing new to be found, the Atlas Obscura celebrates a different way of traveling, and viewing the world. There is plenty out there to discover, so lets start looking!

The 28th of April is Obscura day “an international celebration of unusual places. It is a day of expeditions, back room tours, & exploring hidden wonders in your own hometown”.

Of course, the first thing we all want to do is search for our home town. Surprisingly, Kuwait’s there with only one quiet but pretty awesome listing: “The House of Mirrors“.

Lonely Planet describes the House of Mirrors as:

For a quirky art-in-action experience, visit this small museum in a residential house in the suburbs of Qadisiya. Reputedly, 77 tons of mirror and 102 tons of white cement have been used in the creation of the mirror mosaics that spangle the entire house – both inside and out.

The creation of Lidia al-Qattan, the widow of Khalifa al-Qattan, a renowned Kuwaiti artist, the project was inspired by the decorating of an old piece of dining-room furniture and grew to incorporate epic scenes, as in the Room of the Universe (bedroom) and the Basin of the Sharks (hallway). Ring ahead to request a tour; you should bring a small gift in exchange for the hospitality you will no doubt receive.

I had no idea this place existed o.o’ must pay it a visit … has anyone been?

Atlas Obscura, definitely an awesome tool for the next trip to wherever!
